It’s the ‘Monkey-on-Your-Back’ that others want
YOU to have instead of keeping it for themselves –
where it belongs!
…It’s the mother-in-law who insists that you and the family come for Thanksgiving dinner – every year – when some years you’d like to stay home.
…It’s the co-worker who always asks you to cover for her, but is never available to cover for you.
…It’s the coordinator for the church bazaar who expects that you’ll volunteer – AGAIN – for a time-consuming position that you really don’t have time to do.
…It’s YOU saying ‘No’ at first, but somehow the outcome is always ‘Yes’ and you wonder what just happened.
…It’s YOU feeling tired and angry and stuck, not knowing what to do to get out of feeling that way.
…It’s YOU wishing you had some magic wand to make this problem go away.

Purple Monkey Says:
ALWAYS Validate the ‘ASK.’
That means that whatever people want you to do – even if you think it’s outrageous – remember that they have a good reason (to them) to ask for something from you. When you acknowledge the legitimacy of their request from THEIR perspective, they will be more willing to hear a ‘No’ from you without pushing back, at least as hard as they would have if you had not validated their request first.
Here’s some language you can use, depending on the situation.
“That’s a big assignment you have!”
“I can appreciate what you’re trying to accomplish.”
“I know how big a job that is. I’ve done it before, too.”
“I know how much you love to have the family together for the holidays.”
“I know it’s been hard getting volunteers.”
Notice how each statement starts with the pronoun “I” or a third person statement, “That’s a big assignment.” You’re letting them know that it was O.K. to ask, even if you cannot give a ‘Yes’ to their request.
Once you practice validating the ASK, you’ll notice how much more comfortable it is to say ‘No’ and how much easier it is to preserve the relationship. |
